The power of everyday actions to care for the planet
April 22 marks Earth Day, celebrated this year under the theme “Our Power, Our Planet.” A phrase that invites us to reflect on how we can respond to the climate crisis from our most immediate surroundings. At ComBoca, we work with companies that don’t just talk about sustainability—they practice it every day. And on a date like this, we believe it’s important to share some of their perspectives and experiences. Not as grand gestures, but as possible—and very real—ways of exercising that power through everyday choices.
At Contigo Energía, which has long been committed to a cleaner and more efficient energy model, they acknowledge that environmental discourse has lost momentum in some sectors precisely because it has become a cliché. For Begoña Laveda, Marketing and Communications Director, it is essential to “focus on what can actually be done” rather than repeating ideas that no longer drive action. From her perspective, real power lies in informed decisions, not slogans. That is why they work every day to offer practical alternatives that anyone can adopt—without idealism, but with a long-term vision.
Daily consumption can also become a tool for change. Filantrópico demonstrates this through something as ordinary as coffee. Javier Sanz, the company’s founder, explains that the entire business model has been designed to generate positive impact across the value chain—from small producers at origin to direct delivery to offices in Madrid. At every step, the goal is to minimize environmental footprint—through reusable packaging, for example—and to create dignified employment for people in vulnerable situations. For him, the challenge is to show that another way of producing and consuming is not only possible, but also more logical and more fair.
Travel, as a way of discovering the world, is also at the heart of this transformation. At Evaneos, they have long promoted more sustainable tourism, based on collaboration with local agents and respect for the environment. Marrion Phillips, Head of Sustainability, explains that more and more people understand that traveling responsibly not only reduces environmental impact, but also enriches the experience. In her words, “getting to know a place through the people who live there” allows travelers to connect with a more authentic reality while generating real benefits at the destination.
From another angle, Impact Hub Madrid drives change by supporting those who are building it. Clara Calvo, Head of Workspace Xperience at Impact Hub Madrid, highlights the importance of community in multiplying impact. In their day-to-day work, they see how many initiatives with a transformative purpose gain support, visibility, and the ability to act by becoming part of a network that shares values. For them, power lies in collaboration—in enabling ideas to connect and grow together.
Four very different examples, yet all share something in common: they understand that sustainability is not an abstract concept, but a practice shaped by concrete decisions. At ComBoca, we are fortunate to work alongside these organizations, to listen to their stories, and to see how impact is built step by step.
This Earth Day is not just about remembering what is at stake, but about paying close attention to what is already being done. Because if many small actions can change things, telling those stories is also a way of moving progress forward.
